We are delighted to announce the arrival of 3 new faces into the Business over recent months!

Our 3 New Faces: Robb Paton (Standing), Debbie Rhodes and Jack Dowdeswell

Our first arrival is Robb Paton, Robb is Contract Manager for Birmingham East.  In his role as a Contract Manager, Robb is both personable and friendly which is a critical attribute as he is often the Client’s first point of contact. With this in mind, a lot of Robb’s time is spent visiting Client’s on-site, he will check to see everything is running smoothly and ensure the Operatives are reaching the high standards set by the Company.

When Robb first joined we clean, he was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of the Management Structure, in particular the fact that he works so closely with both Directors, which in turn allows him to provide a great level of service to the Company’s Client base. After only a short time with we clean, Robb commented that he’s

“Glad to have found a Company that works for each other and that cares so much for all of its employees and clients alike.”

Robb has worked in various different industries, ranging from Aviation and Installations to Construction, but he feels he has now found his niche and is incredibly excited to be part of an exciting new era at we clean.

The second ‘New Face’ to join the organisation recently is Debbie Rhodes, who is Contract Manager for Birmingham Central. Debbie has a wealth of experience within the Cleaning Industry, which she’s worked in for over 25 years. Debbie began as a Site Cleaning Manager – with a global provider of facility services – where she was located on a number of large standalone sites managing a team of Cleaning Operatives and working closely with on-site client stakeholders.

More recently Debbie has held an Area Contract Management role responsible for a portfolio of geographically spread Cleaning Contracts across Central England. Like Robb, this experience will hold Debbie in great stead as she will be regularly visiting our clients and interacting with Cleaning Operatives at a number of our high profile and long standing Central Birmingham Contracts including Gateley PLC, Symphony Hall, Town Hall Birmingham and St Phillips Chambers. Debbie was drawn to we clean and its ‘family ethos’ and the very ‘high standards that are set by the Company and the great relationships they build with each individual client.’ With so much experience, Debbie is adapting well to her new role and is enjoying being part of the we clean team.

The Company’s final ‘New Face’ is Jack Dowdeswell, who has joined we clean to develop the organisations Marketing and Social Media strategy. Jack’s background is in Journalism but he is looking forward to developing his specialism in Digital Marketing and help we clean expand their online presence through effective social media and marketing strategies. Initially, Jack’s main focus will be to source and develop content for the Company website and social media pages as well as working on strategies to grow the business and enhance the awareness of the we clean brand. Jack has been with the Company for just over a month and commented

“I am really enjoying learning about the uniqueness of the Cleaning Industry and looking forward to helping contribute to the future growth of a fantastic business as we strive to be clearly recognised as Birmingham’s premier Cleaning Company!”

Gloria Wallen is sadly retiring after nearly half a century of committed service to our Handsworth based contract, Westminster School. Gloria’s relationship with Westminster School began back in 1971 where she started out as a Kitchen Assistant and Cleaning Operative.

Gloria – who lives across the road from this School – has thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of her job as a Cleaning Operative; she has seen hundreds of children grow up and leave the school and takes great ‘pride’ in the fact that she can call a lot of ex-pupils her friends. In Gloria’s 46 years in the job, she has rarely missed a day, this takes incredible dedication and a real desire to reach the high standards that are set by both we clean and Westminster School.

Gloria has been with we clean for 3 years – after a TUPE transfer from Birmingham City Council in 2014 – but those who work with her feel like she’s been with the Company for many years. Maureen Francis, Contract Manager will be upset to see Gloria leave commenting that:

“Gloria has a permanent smile on her face, she’s always in her uniform, working hard and it’s clear to see how much she loves her job”.

On Friday afternoon in the School Staff Room, all the School Staff and work colleagues from we clean gathered to formally wish Gloria all the very best in her retirement. Director Paul Concannon attended the gathering and paid tribute to Gloria’s outstanding longevity and together with Maureen presented her with leaving gifts and cards from all at we clean

After such a lengthy career, everyone wishes her a very happy and well-earned retirement!

David Bird typifies everything a Cleaning Operative should be: he is dedicated, hard-working and has an incredibly positive attitude.

David Bird joined we clean in April 2014, initially only working a couple of hours on a morning. He has now worked his way up to 3 different sites as a Cleaning Operative.

Firstly, at the Headquarters of the West Bromwich Building Society on a morning, he then goes onto their Tipton branch, before returning to the Headquarters where he porters all afternoon and then finishes at Higgs and Sons in Brierley Hill on an evening. Whilst his work days are long, the pride he gets from working hard and providing a quality service means that he doesn’t look at his Cleaning Operative role as a chore, instead, he enjoys his working days!

Lynn Gill, Black Country Contract Manager, who oversees where David work’s commented “David just gets the job done; he’s never late and always has a smile on his face, even at the end of the day! He works really hard and it’s fantastic to see him being rewarded!”

David managed to find a couple of minutes out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions:

What’s your role within the company?

    David hard at work.

I work as a Cleaning Operative at West Bromwich Building Society’s Head Office, their Tipton branch and then at Higgs and Sons, mainly cleaning the reception and restaurant area, taking out all the bins and every month I machine the restaurant floor.

How long have you been at the company?

I’ve been with we clean for 3 years.

When does your working day start?

6-8 on a morning and then I do an afternoon portering job which is 12-3.

What’s your favourite thing about working for we clean?

I enjoy interacting with all sorts of different people throughout my working day, it’s nice when people are friendly and stop by and have a chat.

Have you got any hobbies outside of work?

I like a bit of cycling and swimming if I get the chance, or just relaxing and watching Soccer Saturday.

What does the award mean to you?

Yeah, it’s fantastic, feels like you’ve really achieved something within the company, gives you that extra kick to do more and do better. It’s a great place to work and a great company to work for.

We were recently invited to the Relaxed Performance Pantomime at the iconic Birmingham Hippodrome. Within this world-renowned theatre, our Cleaning Operatives are always on their toes, every day of the week.  Whether they have a small time frame in which to clean the auditorium before the next performance or they are cleaning the windows on the exterior of the building, our on-site team ensure this popular venue is in great shape.

All Birmingham Hippodrome employee’s wore sparkly hats to be more recognisable

The Relaxed Performance Pantomime is open to anybody, but is specially adapted for people who have autism, learning disabilities or sensory and communication disorders. To help everyone feel welcome, the Hippodrome release fewer tickets for sale, provide increased wheelchair capacity and give audience members more space to make them feel comfortable.

Front and back row seats were removed to allow more wheelchair access

The performance of Dick Whittington was captioned

As the Birmingham Hippodrome adapted their processes for this particular performance, our own on-site Cleaning Team also played their part in making the theatre as safe and user friendly as possible. Our team ensured that all doors were left open, allowing all patrons to easily leave and enter at their own will. Our Cleaning Operatives also turned all hand-driers in the washrooms off, so as to create a pleasant and calm environment.

‘Sensory Rooms’ allowed patrons to have a ‘time-out’

Both the auditorium and reception areas were adapted for the Relaxed Performance. Namely, all Hippodrome staff wore bright, glittery hats so as to be easily recognisable to all patrons and not only was there more signs, but these signs were enlarged. Adjacent to the reception area’s there were ‘Sensory Rooms’, filled with fun activities and the ideal place for patrons to take a ‘time out’ if they needed to.  In the auditorium, both front row and back row seats were removed to ensure that there was plenty of wheelchair access. The whole performance is captioned on large screens and volume is slightly reduced.

The Relaxed Performance was an incredibly uplifting experience and it was fantastic to see first-hand how our Performance Partnership with the Hippodrome directly contributes to such positive events!
